We continue to monitor rapidly changing conditions impacting exports from India. Over the past several weeks, our freight partners have reported a noticeable increase in congestion and operational challenges across several major Indian ports and container terminals.
Current Market Conditions
- Heavy congestion at export terminals is resulting in extended truck wait times for container gate-in.
- Container yards are operating near or at capacity, slowing the movement of export cargo.
- Increased instances of vessel shut-outs, missed cut-offs, and cargo rollovers as vessels reach capacity.
- Reduced availability of empty containers at inland depots, causing dispatch delays.
- Booking space has become more difficult to secure as carriers continue to report full or overbooked vessels.
- Communication and coordination at the terminal level have become more challenging as port operations work through the increased volume.
What’s Driving the Disruptions?
Several factors appear to be contributing to the current environment:
- A significant increase in export activity as importers continue accelerating shipments amid ongoing global trade and tariff uncertainty.
- Earlier-than-normal peak season demand is placing additional strain on vessel capacity and container availability.
- Continued schedule disruptions throughout the global shipping network as carriers work to recover from recent geopolitical and regional shipping challenges.
- Equipment imbalance: Empty containers are becoming increasingly difficult to reposition where export demand is strongest.
What This Means
While our manufacturing partners continue to produce on schedule, these transportation challenges can create delays after production is complete. Containers may take longer to secure, bookings may be pushed to later sailings, and transit schedules may become less predictable than normal.
An additional consequence of these conditions has been a series of General Rate Increases (GRIs) announced and implemented by ocean carriers, with further increases continuing to be announced. While it is impossible to predict the full extent of future freight market movements, the current combination of strong demand, limited vessel space, equipment shortages, and port congestion suggests continued volatility in the months ahead. Industry discussions indicate freight rates could potentially approach double current levels over the next couple of months if these conditions persist.
Our supply chain team remains in close communication with our freight partners and production facilities and is actively monitoring conditions. We will continue to provide updates as the market evolves and work proactively to minimize disruptions wherever possible.
